I wore this to the Russian ballet on Saturday to see Romeo & Juliet. Very nice show and going to a ballet was on my list of things to do for a very long time. Up next I hope to see an Italian Opera.

Anyway, I have a sore ankle so I was forced to wear flats, otherwise I would have definitely stepped out in heels.

How I Layer

Layering in Winter is one of my favorite things to do. I don't always want to wear a big down or puffy coat, so this post will show you one of the ways I like to layer with style.

The base

1st layer - A thick knit cardigan tied with an obi belt.

Add a circle/infinity scarf to protect the neck from exposure.

Add a leather jacket on top of the cardigan.

Complete the layered look with a faux fur vest.

I don't normally find many things in Forever 21 as it can be a bit overwhelming. But this dress was a last minute find as I was checking out at the register. It was on display and I went over and saw it was my size and took it right off the hanger.

Maxi dresses of course can be worn in all seasons, and since it's winter I paired this sleeveless one with a cardigan, boots, and knit hat.

I came across this chandelier yesterday on a random trip to Urban Outfitters. At first I had my heart set on a black shade crystal chandelier, but I think at $58 bucks this one wins.

This gold one will add the right amount of elegance and glam the bedroom needs.

By the way, it's much prettier in person. Can't wait to pick this up tonight and hang it up.

Some days (especially on Mondays) I just want to be really comfortable and that requires layering comfortable cozy knits and wearing flats.

These shoes are the oldest most comfortable shoes I own. They are from the now deceased Parade of Shoes. Does anyone remember that store? That was my go to place in high school for "dress shoes."

I'm in the process of growing my haircut out, so that means getting over the awkward stage and covering it up. Thank goodness for scarves!

During my time off I made some improvements to my living room since my style is changing. I find myself drawn to softer textiles and craving a more simple look overall in my home.

So that meant editing things and getting some new stuff. In the background you can see my new flokati pillows from Target on the couch, new curtains from Anna's Linens for the winter months. It's amazing how those two changes make the room feel completely different. Pictures of the entire living room coming soon.

Hi my dears, I'm on a staycation again just enjoying the extra time with family and my friends. Regular posting will begin next week I promise. Usually I'm not too patient when it comes to finishing up with decorating my own rooms, but this one I want to be just right. My Current Home Inspiration

On my computer I have so many images that inspire me for the home. So here are some pictures from around the blog world; Apartment Therapy, Design Sponge, Ikea Hackers and wherever else, that I'd like to use in some way in my apartment.

I love this color palette for my living room. I have a deep purple couch and I'm looking to add some other pops of color (the yellow and magenta).

I have a blank canvas that I'm not currently using and wrapping some delicate trim around it would be so pretty. Simple right?

I'd love to have extra shelving like this to put in my kitchen area for plates, bowls, and cool pottery to display.

I love everything about this photo, mainly the furniture arrangement.

I love this idea of built in shelving to create an entryway. This is a more ambitious idea for my place since I'm renting, but a girl can dream about it.

I'm obsessed with any decor styling people do with the Ikea Expedit's. I love that they placed two different sizes side by side for more storage and tabletop display. My electronics take up most of the space on mine and I'd really like to be able to have a lamp and some other nicer things on the top.

Love this photo. After recently acquiring more hats, I positioned about four of them going down the wall just like this picture.

And here is what I'd love for my bedroom to look like. It's dark, but it's so rich, warm, and cozy. I'll get there soon, promise.

I recently saw a post over at Soul Pretty where she purchased a New York neighborhood vinyl poster for her entryway and I just fell in love with it. So over the weekend I went to my local Homegoods store to see if I could find one for my apartment, and here is what I got for a mere $7.99.

Playing Dress Up - Take 5

If you are a long time reader of the blog, then you remember previous times I've played dress up. New followers can check the "labels" section for this feature.

I can buy a piece, in this case the jacket, and in my head envision an entire outfit around it. I was at my desk at work and thought of this look, so once I got home I pulled the pieces and here you have it.

A vintage beaded jacket has been on my wish list for quite a while. We found a store called Retro City Fashions in the Mission neighborhood while doing a search for vintage stores in San Francisco. They weigh the clothes and charge accordingly, this one was $17.

The leather vintage bag is a recent purchase from the Renegade Craft Fair held last weekend in Chicago. I stopped by the Lagelle booth and got this. Check out her Etsy shop for handmade accessories and vintage goods, very nice and talented woman.

I just love to play up menswear inspired pieces and make them work for me. This is kind of an unexpected look from me since I tend to wear dresses and skirts so often, but it's nice to borrow a little inspiration from the men every now and then.

This vintage necklace I got at Thrift Town on my trip to San Francisco with a last minute stop at the jewelry counter. It has more of a purple color to it that you can't see well in these pictures.

This red blazer is a purchase I made at Thrift Town on my visit to San Francisco. This store had tags that identified better quality garments, and this Nordstrom wool blend blazer was one such item.

Something about red and black that just begs for leopard print accessories, so in came the belt, necklace and bracelet.

This bag I purchased just walking around and going into a random boutique in Sausalito. It also came in cognac, burgundy, gray, and camel. And believe me, I debated for a few minutes on which one to get but when in doubt I always get black. What makes this bag so cool is that it converts into a backpack, shoulder bag, and messenger bag.

It's so hard to get back in the swing of things when you have been off work for over a week. But normal activities and routines must resume, insert long sigh here.

I had been looking for a gold statement necklace for a long time and when I saw this in a shop on my trip, I snatched it up right away. In my head I already knew I'd wear it against something black so that it pops.

My trip to San Francisco was 5 days of non-stop sight seeing, good food, and shopping. This city was on my bucket list of places to visit and it did not disappoint.

On our first afternoon we made our way to Brenda's French Soul Food that came highly recommended.

Yummy Watermelon Iced Tea.

Beignet sampler for an appetizer: Granny Smith Apple, Ghiradelli Chocolate, Plain and Crawfish. So good.

Shrimp & Grits for my entree.

I loved the vintage framed mirrors that were on the wall.

On our 2nd day we made our way to the crookedest street, Lombard.

I look kind of tired because I was. It was quite the hike up just to get to this point, but so worth it.

Next up was Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf for Trish's Mini Donuts that a friend recommended we try.

Cinnamon and sugar donuts, melts in your mouth when warm.

At Pier 39 with Alcatraz in the back. Didn't get to go in the famous prison, but next time I will make sure to go. Escape from Alcatraz is one of my favorite movies by the way.

Later that evening we went to the Haight/Ashbury area for some vintage and thrift shopping and then a Happy Hour at Hobson's Choice. We met really cool people at this bar, very down to earth and the cocktails were great. With my travel buddy Diana.

The next day we had the bright idea that the only way we wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge was to bike it.

We got our bikes, helmets, and maps and headed out. A journey that took about two hours with a few uphill and downhill challenges but well worth the amazing views and experience overall. I highly recommend anyone who is athletic and likes a challenge do this.

How many times can one say you biked the Golden Gate Bridge. I'll say it's my first and last. lol

The ride down hill into Sausalito was gorgeous, such a cute quaint town.

We stopped at Salito's by the water for lunch and rewarded ourselves with a great meal.

Seafood pasta for me. Delicious!

On the ferry ride back to the Pier with the Golden Gate Bridge behind us.

I absolutely love San Francisco and on my next visit I plan to visit some winery's in Sonoma and Napa Valley, just didn't have enough time this go round.

This vintage blouse used to be a dress, but I thought it better to have it altered as a blouse because of its sheerness. I'm wearing the zip in the front instead of the back since there is not a tag on the garment. So I suppose it doesn't really matter which way I wear it.

I love the loafer shoe trend, but didn't want to spend a lot for it. I found these leopard print loafers on a random day in Kohl's. The shoes got a lot of stares as I walked down the street, but I don't mind that. This outfit is a perfect example of how I build an outfit. I started with the leopard print cardigan, and everything else just kind of evolved after that. Piled on multi strand black beaded necklaces and at the last minute before I hit the door (sorry no pictures) I added a sheer black flower pin to the cardigan, a hat, and a black and gold ring for the finishing touches. Sometimes less isn't more, more is just better.

For a long time I didn't think there was a Goodwill in the inner city limits of Chicago until my friend told me about one in the West Loop of Chicago. So there we went on a Sunday afternoon. After browsing the entire store and not finding anything, my friend comes over with this jacket for me. I've been wanting a red jacket for a while now and I still want a classic red trench coat, but this is a great option for layering as blazer.

Do you know the main difference between cheetah print and leopard print?

I did a search to find out, and here is the difference described better than I can state it:

"A leopard print has rosette-shaped spots with black blots encircling a darker shade of the golden yellow background.

Cheetah print on the other hand is composed of solid black spots. It doesn’t have rosettes like the leopard print. You can also think of the cheetah print as the leopard print minus the darker yellow core."

No matter how tough life gets, there is always something positive to focus on to overcome any grievance.

This is a sentiment I constantly have to remind myself of. I am thankful for my family and friends, my relationship with God, my spiritual life, my health, and all of you for tuning in to my blog.

A Little Sunshine

After several rainy days in a row, Sunday we finally had some sun. I opened all the blinds and let the sunshine pour in to my apartment. And even though my outfit reflects gray days, my mood felt pretty bright.

You've seen me take outfit shots many times in front of this wall with some of my shoes. And I've switched things out a few times until I had an arrangement I was pleased with. I think this area well reflects who I am and some of my passions as an artist. So finally, here is my Foyer all done up.

I moved this rug from my bedroom to this area for its durability for high-traffic.

I've always wanted a gallery wall, so I just used pieces I already owned and printed off some of my photography to frame. I'm sure this wall will always evolve.

I recently watched the Bill Cunningham New York documentary and was very inspired by his quotes and some of the others interviewed. My favorite quotes from Bill were:

"Fashion...it's the armor to survive the reality of everyday life."

"It's the clothes, not the celebrity, and not the spectacle."

"I look for what I think a woman could wear, would wear, and whether it would fit a human body, other than the model...If it isn't something a woman could wear, I have no interest in it."

"My hat salon was on the 10th floor. Ginger Rogers used to come and Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe was one, and I had no interest cause they weren't stylish."

I highly recommend this documentary on Bill who is very down to earth and has a photographic eye directed towards style and not for who that person is, rather they be a New York Socialite or a teen on their way to school. Bill Cunningham is someone who doesn't care about where he resides or what he eats, his real enjoyment and sustenance in life comes from style and fashion.

Last night I unpacked some Fall essentials in preparation for the cooler weather.

I started with all 20 of my hats, which I think I have a hat addiction. The hot pink cloche is the latest purchase from Filene's Basement.

And here are some of them displayed replacing the summer lids.

I also recently realized that two modest sized closets in my apartment just wasn't enough, so I purchased this industrial strength garment rack from Target. It packs a mean punch with weight and I have all my skirts and dresses hung for easy access.

And that bag hanging on the left was a gift from my friend. I adore that my friends support my love of vintage.

From most of my posts and seeing that I source a lot of my clothes from Filene's Basement, I thought I'd just talk a little about my favorite store. You can find all prices ranges there, from store brands to high end designers. In a way, it reminds me of Century 21 in New York, but more neat and organized. You really can't beat the prices and then the frequent sales events just adds to the bargains to be had. I can always find a pair of shoes or a dress for that special occasion. If you have one in your city, definitely check it out. What is your favorite discount store?

A Different Animal

I love leopard print just as much as the next girl, but switching it up to a different animal is a nice change of pace.

When I saw this zebra print pencil skirt, I quickly slipped it on and was so pleased that it fit perfectly. So in love! Gave the black and white my favorite pop with red.

I've always loved the denim on denim look but never had the light wash denim shirt to try it.

At first I tried to thrift an over sized one in the men's section of a thrift store, but no success. So the other day I was in H&M and ventured into the men's area, and bam, there was my over sized denim shirt. This one is an XL and I rolled and pushed up the sleeves. Do you ladies ever find things in the men's section to wear?

Hello my Sweets. I've been enjoying my day off from work (yay for a four day weekend)! Got some laundry done, picked up my dry cleaning, and hit up a couple of thrift stores. I love "me" time where I can do whatever I want.

I've been a little under the weather since I caught a cold from my 8 month old nephew. Even though I knew he had a cold, I still just had to kiss and snuggle him. But I think I managed to mask my sickness in these photos.

I've had this skirt for years and it was one of my first purchases from Forever 21 and I still love it in all of it's unevenness.

My dad calls me Shorty (I’m not short). The term was popular in the early 90’s and he just never stopped.

2. What's a weird habit of yours?
I mentally trace furniture, floors, just about anything in a room when I’m bored.

3. Do you have any weird phobias?
I’m afraid of cats. One scratched me when I was a kid and I’ve been distrustful of them ever since, sneaky lil creatures.

4. What's a song you secretly LOVE to blast and belt out when you're alone?
Ironic – By Alanis Morissette. "It's like raiiiiiinnnnnnn..."

5. What's one of your biggest pet peeves?
People that don’t say please, excuse me, and thank you. Where have the manners gone?

Hmm, I’m not sure I have one. I just start to sweat when I’m super nervous.

Uh Teddy.

Oh my goodness. I am a sweets person. But I love baking cookies and have to give away most of them to avoid eating so many.

A classic white button down shirt is a true staple in any girls closet. I wore this out to dinner on Saturday with some friends and wanted to be comfortable but stylish of course. So I paired this classic shirt (leopard tank peeking underneath) with jeans, heels and my signature hat.

Margie's Candies is more than just ice cream and candy, it is a true delectable experience. Located in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago (corner of Armitage & Western), this shop has been around since 1921. It still has all of it's vintage charm inside and you can always expect a busy bustling crowd waiting outside for a decadent treat.

Picture taking isn't allowed for some reason, but I took these without a flash before I saw the sign. ; )

Scrapbook Paper Art

I have previously discussed using fabric as art and originally that was my plan for my Moroccan style bathroom. But after searching every aisle and not finding just the right fabric, I decided to browse the unique collection of scrapbook paper. Below are the six sheets I selected, all for $10.45 at JoAnn's!

First I laid out a design to use as my back drop in the frame.

I then taped the back of them together.

Next I used the entire taped backdrop and traced and cut out the exact dimensions I needed to fit inside the frame.

Next was the lace sheets to be placed on top of the backdrop.

Once I had the design I wanted, I traced and cut off the extra paper hanging off for a perfect fit to the backdrop.

I then glued the back of the lace sheets together so they wouldn't shift when I placed them in the frame.

Once that was done, I placed the entire lace insert layer in the frame first.

Added the backdrop layer on top of that.

And here is what it looks like hanging on the wall.

I am a firm believer that you can turn just about anything into art. And when you are on a tight budget, thinking outside the box for the normal use of things is a great way to have inexpensive custom art.

Sidenote: Here is what the frame was previously used for in my old Spa themed bathroom.

My bathroom is still a work in progress as I'm still looking for a couple more pieces, but please stay tuned for the complete tour.

Friday Sweet Treat

Yesterday I discovered a great new to me blog called The Grilled Cheese Social. My mouth watered as I browsed the entire website full of delicious out of the box grilled cheese recipes. I copied about four to try and couldn't resist making one that looked sweet and easy last night.

I made the "french toast grilled cheese" recipe, minus the heart shape and whip cream.

Here are the ingredients:

- 2 pieces of challah bread

- French toast batter (I used 1 egg, 1/4 cup of milk, 1/3 tsp vanilla, and 1/3 tsp cinnamon)

- 3 large sliced strawberries

- 2 pads of salted butter

- 2 tbs of Mascarpone Cheese

- 2 tbs of Nutella

- Whip Cream optional

Make your favorite French Toast batter and coat the bread with it and fry it up with the butter.

Once done, lay it on a plate. Let it cool down for a bit unlike I did. ; )

Spread the Mascarpone cheese on one slice and the Nutella on the other slice. If the bread is still hot, all of this will be a melty mess.

Place sliced strawberries on the cheese slice.

Put the Nutella slice on top to form a sandwich.

Devour and moan!

Marilyn Monroe and her famous dress blew up into the Windy City recently and is leaving quite a 26ft tall impression on the locals and tourists. The opinions about it are endless, with some saying it's useless, tasteless and others thinking it's just downright cool.

This is her famous scene from the movie The Seven Year Itch and like it or not, this statue will be in Chicago for at least a year.

As previously mentioned here and here, I attended a Vintage Bazaar back in May and purchased three pieces. This yellow shirt dress was the last find, and boy what a find!

By the time I found this vendor selling this dress I was all out of cash and to my horror she didn't have a credit card machine. Knowing just how much I wanted the dress, the vendor asked me how much money I had. I replied, "You don't want to know," because I didn't want to insult her. She said, "try me." I looked in my wallet and counted the coins I had and told her I had eighty cents. To my delight and surprise, she sold it to me because the dress had been in their shop for so long and she just wanted to get rid of it. EIGHTY CENTS folks, eighty cents! I can't believe that it hadn't sold. Well I had a vision for this lovely, especially since I have a pink one just like it. This style of dress is just my type.
