Handmade Fashion

As someone who is creative, I have the upmost respect for anyone who designs their own clothes, bags, jewelry, etc. The price tag is usually based upon a higher quality of materials and the care and time it took for construction. It's not being done in a sweat shop, by several hands, or on an assembly line.

In order to fill a creative void at certain times, I've ventured into a store and purchased materials in order to make my own custom jewelry.

How do you feel about buying custom handmade one-of-a-kind items? Is it high on your fashion must haves? Do you consider it like buying custom art from a local artist? Or do you strictly buy fashion items from retailers?
Here are some of my favorite designers/DIY bloggers:

  1. Thank you for including me, Sing! =D

I have a mantra, "I buy what I can and make what I can't." Aside from that, I'd rather support an indie/local artist. It's rare that I buy stuff from retail stores (nothing bad, sometimes I just don't like the materials).

  2. I buy wherever, but I like things that are one (or few) of a kind. Over the years, I have bought lots of accessories from vendors at festivals...a couple of them have even made unique pieces for me. I just bought some stuff from a craft market here in Brazil...the stuff is easy to find here, but is rare in the US.

Because I have tons of stuff, and much of it old, I am starting to re-purpose my accessories. I am not particularly crafty, but blog surfing has helped me get more creative! I will be blogging about my "re-designs" in the future...
